Filming is underway on the already highly anticipated The Dark Tower, which is based on the book by Stephen King.

The Oscar-winner is set to take on the role of Walter - aka The Man in Black - and reveals that they didn't want this character to be 'overly fantastic.'

Speaking to EW, the actor said: "Well, he is a man, actually. They wanted to go very human and grounded with this. Obviously, there are mythical proportions of good and evil in Walter.

"But we didn't want to go overly fantastic. That would drop the humanity. So Walter, for me, is a man who exposes hypocrisies."

The movie sees McConaughey star alongside Idris Elba, who is set to take on the role of Roland Deschain aka The Gunslinger.

A terrific cast has been assembled as Claudia Kim, Jackie Earle Haley, and Abbey Lee, are just some of the names who will star alongside Elba and McConaughey.

The Dark Tower marks the return of Nikolaj Arcel to the director's chair in what is his first film since the terrific A Royal Affair back in 2012. The Dark Tower is the biggest film of the Danish director's career to date.

As well as being in the director's chair, Arcel has also teamed up with Akiva Goldsman and Anders Thomas Jensen to turn King's book into a screenplay.

As for McConaughey, he has a very busy second half of 2016 ahead with Free State of Jones, The Sea of Trees, and animation film Kubo and the Two Strings set to hit the big screen.

The Oscar-winner has also completed work on Gold and Sing, which is another animation project. If you are a fan of McConaughey, you are going to be seeing plenty of him over the next few months.

The Dark Tower is released 17th February 2017.
