The fifth film in the popular action franchise has now taken over $511 million worldwide to become the eighth highest grossing film of the year so far.

The movie saw Tom Cruise return to the role of Ethan Hunt almost twenty years after he played the character for the first time - yes, Mission: Impossible really was released back in 1996.

Rogue Nation is now comfortably ahead of San Andreas (469 million) and is closing in on Cinderella, which has grossed $542 million worldwide since its release back in March.

Rogue Nation is currently the third highest grossing film in the franchise, behind Ghost Protocol ($694 million) and Mission: Impossible II ($546) million.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation has been winning over audiences since its release back in July and is one of the most successful films of the summer, behind Jurassic World, Minions, and Inside Out.

The movie saw Christopher McQuarrie take over the helm of the franchise for the first time as he reunited with Cruise for their second film project together; they first teamed up for Jack Reacher.

There are plenty of familiar faces on board as Cruise is joined by Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Jeremy Renner. However, Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin were the two big additions to the cast list this time around.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation continues to perform well at the global box office and could leap over a couple more films on the highest grossing movies of 2015 list before it has finished.

There's already word that a sixth film could well be in the pipeline with Cruise returning to the role of Hunt once again.
