Philomena

Philomena

Philomena is set to be one of the most moving and heart-breaking films of the years, as Judi Dench returns to the big screen.

Philomena sees Dench team up with director Stephen Frears for the first time to tell the true story of Philomena Lee, a woman who was forced to give up her child for adoption after falling pregnant out of wedlock in the fifties.

The movie is based on the novel is based on the novel The Lost Child Of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith, a political journalist who helps Philomena in her search for her son.

Steve Coogan will play Sixsmith in the film, he has also penned the very powerful screenplay along with Jeff Pope.

Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a 'fallen woman'. When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him but with no success.

Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between Philomena and Martin.

The film is a compelling narrative of human love and loss that ultimately celebrates life, showing that there is laughter even in the darkest places.

Philomena is set to receive its UK premiere at the London Film Festival next month, and it is set to be one of the films not to miss.

Philomena is released 1st November.
