Firth is set to reprise the role of Sir Harry Pearce as Spooks comes to the big screen for the first time with The Greater Good.

The actor has been with the television series since it aired for the first time back in 2002 and will star alongside Kit Harington, Jennifer Ehle, Elyes Gabel, Lara Pulver, and Eleanor Matsuura in the new film.

Speaking to the Press Association, the actor said: "We set a benchmark with the TV show. I think we created a new level of TV drama and we are hopeful to do this for this film. So it's the same deal but bigger.

"We've worked really hard to make the transition and not to emulate anything that's out there. There are some obvious comparisons of the same genre in this country, but we're not going there. We're very happy with it and we're excited to show it to everyone."

Spooks: The Greater Good will see Bharat Nalluri in the director's chair for his first movie since Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day back in 2008.

However, Nalluri is no stranger to the world of Spooks, having directed a handful of the television episodes.

Spooks: The Greater Good is just one of a trio of films that we are going to see Firth star in this year, as he has already completed work on Happily Ever After and Clavius.

Happily Ever After will see him star alongside Alex Kingston, Sara Paxton, and Janet Montgomery, while Clavius will see him team up with director Kevin Reynolds.

Spooks: The Greater Good is released 8th May.
