Prisoners has topped the U.S. box office, toppling Insidious: Chapter 2 from the top spot.

Prisoners sees Hugh Jackman return to the big screen as he teams up with Jake Gyllenhaal as part of a fantastic ensemble cast.

The movie has already been lighting up the festival circuit and took $21.4 million to secure the #1 spot.

Insidious: Chapter 2 was down just one place this week after spending a single week as the U.S. number one movie. The Family was also down one at three.

The only movie on the up this week was Instructions Not Included, as the movie went from six to four.

Battle of the Year was the second new entry inside the top five as it opened at number five.

Comedy We're The Miller was down one at six, while former #1 Lee Daniels' The Butler was down three at seven.

Riddick was the biggest faller this week as the Vin Diesel movie dropped from three to eight.

The Wizard of Oz 3D was the third and final new entry at nine, while Planes rounded off the top ten.
