'Resident Evil 6' is set to be the final instalment of the popular franchise.

Paul W.S. Anderson will be back in the director's chair for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, while Milla Jovovich is back in the central role.

The filmmaker is still in the middle of writing a final script and isn't yet sure when it will be ready for production.

Probed about the significance of the movie's name, Anderson confirmed: "That's what's on the title page. It's 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter', so absolutely."

He told Collider.com: "There are no set dates for shooting yet. I think we're waiting until we have a first draft screenplay and then go from there.

"I don't know [when it will be in theatres]. Depends how fast I write, I guess. There's no set date yet but hopefully we'll have an announcement for that soon."

The post-zombie apocalypse series follows Jovovich's character Alice as she takes on a shady Umbrella organization and is one of the most successful video game adaptations of all time.

Following the first film's release in 2002, its popularity has only grown, with 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' grossing a massive $300 million worldwide.
