Robert Downey Jr has revealed that a fourth Iron Man film is not currently in the pipeline.

We haven't seen Downey Jr in a solo Iron Man film since the billion dollar success of Iron Man 3 back in 2013. But we did see him reprise the role of Tony Stark last year in Avengers: Age of Ultron and he is about to step into the Captain America franchise for the first time.

While fans are excited about the fact that Iron Man and Captain America are going to go head to head in Captain America: Civil War, it seems that they will not get their wish of another solo Iron Man film.

When asked about the project by USA TOday, the actor said: "I don't think that's on the cards."

And while Civil War may not be Iron Man 4, Downey Jr says it does feel like an Iron Man sequel to him.

He continued: "In a way it's 'Cap 3' but for me it's like my little 'Iron Man 4'. And then it's back to the thing we all recognise. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an 'Avengers' thing comes through because that's how it is until it changes. If it changes."

Captain America: Civil War is the third solo film for the popular character and will follow the much-loved story arc from the comics.

This film will kick off Phase 3 of Marvel films in style as it is set to be the biggest and the longest Marvel film to date.

Not only does Downey Jr step into the Captain America franchise for the first time with Civil War, but the film also sees him work with directors Anthony and Joe Russo for the first time.

Civil War looks set to lay some of the foundations for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and the Russo brothers have promised a 'controversial' end to the new film.

While the cast list for Avengers: Infinity War has not yet been announced, I personally am hoping to see Downey Jr on it.

Captain America: Civil War is released 29th April.
