Rumours have been swirling for a while that Downey Jr could make an appearance in the new Spider-Man film, but now THR has revealed that a deal has been done between Marvel and the actor.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the first Spider-Man film to be made under the Marvel banner after a deal was struck between Marvel and Sony.

Tom Holland is set to take on the role of Peter Parker for the first time and we will see him make his debut in this role in Captain America: Civil War next week.

In fact, it was Downey Jr's character Iron Man who introduced us to Spider-Man for the first time in a trailer for Civil War earlier this year.

Just where Tony Stark would fit into a solo Spider-Man film is unknown but it looks like he could serve as some sort of mentor to the young hero.

However, there is no official word of Downey Jr's casting from Marvel... so we are going to have to wait and see if the rumours turn out to be true.

As for Downey Jr, he will make his Marvel return in Civil War; which will be the first time that we have seen the popular character appear in the Captain America franchise. It is also the first time that we have seen him take on the role of Tony Stark since the huge box office success of Avengers: Age of Ultron last year.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will start filming later this year and we will see Jon Watts in the director's chair. This will be his first Marvel film.

Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, and Tony Revolori are already on the cast list.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the only new Marvel franchise launched next year and will be released after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and before Thor: Ragnarok.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is released 28th July 2017.
