Sam Rockwell has revealed that his role in The Way, Way Back was influenced heavily by the performance of Bill Murray in Meatballs.

The movie sees Rockwell team up with director's Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for a comedy coming of age story.

And while Rockwell admits that there are elements of many different characters in the role he plays, it was Murray that inspired him the most.

Speaking to Vulture the actor said: "It was pretty self-explanatory in the script. It was pretty obvious that this character was kind of an homage to [Murray's Meatballs] character, and some others: Walter Matthau from Bad News Bears, Richard Pryor in Bustin' Loose."

"Those characters influenced me quite a bit, and Michael Keaton in Mr Mum, and a little Night Shift. Those archetypes, the misanthrope, the grouchy adult that treats kids like adults.

"Bill Murray was the main go-to reference, and I think we talked about it a little bit, but it was sort of unsaid for me.

"But there are prototypes for every character, everything I've done. Everything's been done before, you know?"

Rockwell will team up with Steve Carell, Toni Collete, Allison Janney and Maya Rudolph for this new movie - which is set for release later this summer.

Rockwell has also set to star in Better Living Through Chemistry and he has completed work on Laggies, which is due out next year.

The Way, Way Back is released 28th August.
