Scarlett Johansson has described Black Widow has having a ‘rich past’ and reveals that she has really enjoyed exploring that over a series of Marvel films.

Johansson will reprise the role of Black Widow this week as she teams up with Chris Evans for Captain America: The Winter Soldier - a movie that sees us learn a little more about this mysterious character.

And it seems that we are going to learn even more about her in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, which the actress is due to start filming.

Speaking at the UK press conference in London, the actress said: “She has a rich past as you’ve already described, she definitely comes from a really dark past…I think she’s had to desensitise or dehumanise in a way to be able to do and see some of the things she’s seen and participated in willingly.

"I think she’s just now grappling with the fact that she may be experiencing some trauma from that, or at least she has feelings about things. Maybe she doesn’t sleep so well at night. It’s just sort of hitting her right now that she’s kind of been acting as a sort of “gun for hire” and in doing that she’s never really made any active choices and that the rug has sort of been pulled from under her feet.

“So I think more interestingly would be to follow the progression of that story, bring her back home and see where that kind of leads to. But of course, that’s all in my imaginary next instalment. We’ve thrown the ball around a little bit but nothing is in the works right now. You'll get more of Widow's back-story in 'Avengers 2'“

The Winter Solider will mark the third outing for Johansson in this role, having appeared in Iron Man 2 and Avengers Assemble. This will be the second time that she has worked with Evans on a Marvel film, having come together for the first time in Avengers in 2012.

Filming on Avengers: Age of Ultron is already underway as Joss Whedon has penned the screenplay and will return to the director’s chair.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is released 26th March.
