Suicide Squad, which is the latest DC Comic to be adapted for the big screen, was savaged by the critics last week but has been a box office smash.

The film, which sees David Ayer back in the director's chair, comfortably saw off the challenge from everyone and toppled Jason Bourne from the top spot.

Globally, Suicide Squad has grossed $267.1 million in its opening weekend and is on course to another huge box office hit for the comic book genre.

Jason Bourne slipped a single place as it took $22.7 million in its second weekend on release. Comedy Bad Moms was also down one this week at number three.

The Secret Life of Pets was the first of two none-movers on the chart this week while Star Trek Beyond slipped three places from two to this week's number five.

Nine Lives, which is the first film for director Barry Sonnenfeld since Men In Black 3 back in 2012, was the second and final new entry, as the family comedy opened at number six.

Lights Out was down one at seven while Nerve was another none-mover as the Emma Roberts and Dave Franco driven movie was at number eight.
