When you see the names Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen at the top of a cast list, you know at least that the movie they're starring in will showcase some stellar acting performances. As is the case with upcoming drama The Good Liar, which pairs the two in a story "about the secrets we keep and the lives (or lies) we live)".

Mirren plays the part of a widow named Betty McLeish, who joins an online dating service and comes into contact with McKellen's Roy Courtnay. What she doesn't know about the man is that he's a career con artist, and somebody who has his heart set on stealing away her £3 million fortune.

Despite warnings from her technologically-savvy grandson (played by Russell Tovey), the first look trailer (above) certainly makes it look like she'll be swindled out of her savings. This isn't going to be an easy 'hit' for Courtnay, however. In fact, it's described as the "most treacherous tightrope walk of his life."

Gods and Monsters Oscar-winning screenwriter Bill Condon directed and produced the movie, from a screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher, which was based on the critically-acclaimed novel of the same name, by Nicholas Searle.

Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter also stars, whilst Greg Yolen also serves as a producer alongside Condon. Executive producers include Richard Brener, Andrea Johnston, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, Anjay Nagpal, Jack Morrissey and Nick O'Hagan.

Tobias Schliessler worked as director of photography on the film, with production designer John Stevenson, editor Virginia Katz, and costume designer Keith Madden. Carter Burwell composed the music.

The Good Liar opens in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2019.
