The Revenant Takes Top Spot At U.S. Box Office

The Revenant has toppled Ride Along 2 from the top of the U.S. box office and claimed the number one spot.

The Revenant was one of two movies that were on the up this week as the Leonardo DiCaprio movie jumped up one spot from last week's number two.

The Golden Globe-winning film took just over $34 million over the weekend to hold off the challenge from the likes of Star Wars and Ride Along 2. The movie is the favourite to dominate the Oscars next month.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the other film on the up this week as it jumped from three to number two. The movie has grossed $1.940 billion at the global box office and is closing in on being the third film to take over $2 billion at the global box office.

Ride Along 2 fell two places as it ended the weekend the number three; it spent just one week as the U.S. number one.

Dirty Grandpa was the first of a trio of new entries as Zac Efron teams up with Robert De Niro for the new comedy. The movie took $16 million and opened at number four.

The Boy and The 5th Wave were the second and third new entries as they opened at five and six. The 5th Wave is the latest young adult novel to get the big screen treatment as the film is based on the book of the same name by Rick Yancey.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which marks the return of Michael Bay to the director's chair, slipped three places from four to this week's number seven.

Comedy Daddy's Home and animation film Norm of the North were both down three places as they finished the weekend at eight and nine.

Critically acclaimed The Big Short rounded off the top ten, slipped two places from last week's number eight.
