The Secret Life of Pets Holds off Tarzan At UK Box Office

The Secret Life of Pets has held off the tough challenge from The Legend of Tarzan to hold onto the number one spot at the UK box office.

It is the third week at number one for the animation film, which is by the studio that brought us the Despicable Me movies. The film took £3.6 million over the weekend and has grossed over £22 million in the UK alone.

The Legend of Tarzan is the latest big blockbuster to be released this summer and sees Alexander Skarsgård in the title role while David Yates is back in the director's chair.

The Legend of Tarzan narrowly missed out on claiming the top spot this weekend, grossing £3.5 million to open at number two.

Now You See Me 2 was the second new entry inside the top ten this week, as the magic movie opened at number three. The movie comes three years after the success of the first and Jon M. Chu take over the director's chair from Louis Leterrier.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie and Central Intelligence were both down two places this week as they rounded off the top five at four and five.

Sultan was new in at six while Independence Day: Resurgence was down three places at this week's number seven.

The Conjuring 2 also fell out of the top five as the horror film slipped three spots to number eight.

The Neon Demon was the fourth and final new entry inside the top ten as it opened at number nine. The movie marks the return of Nicolas Winding Refn to the director's chair for his first feature since Only Gods Forgive.

Me Before You was this week's biggest faller as the romance movie slipped four places from six to number ten.

The Secret Life of Pets is going to face an even tougher challenge to stay at number one this week as Ghostbusters and Ice Age: Collision Course have both been released.
