Tom Hanks says he is glad that Disney didn’t simply portray Walt Disney as ‘Uncle Walt’ in Saving Mr Banks.

Hanks has become the first actor to portray Walt Disney on the big screen with the release of Saving Mr Banks this weekend.

The movie follows the relationship between Disney and author P.L. Travers as he tries to convince her to let him adapt her beloved Mary Poppins for the big screen.

Speaking to Sky New the actor said: "I think it's smart of them, it would have been easy for Disney to turn it into the 'Uncle Walt' version of it all - but I think if you're going to go back you've got to give it a little bit of teeth."

And Hanks was able to get his teeth into Disney’s character, as he reveals a difficult relationship with his father to Travers as he tries to show her that Mary Poppins would be in could hands.

Hanks teams up with Emma Thompson for the first time, while Colin Farrell, Ruth Wilson and Paul Giamatti make up an all star cast list.

It has been a busy autumn for Hanks having also led the cast of Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips; a film that saw him take on the title role.

Either performance in Saving Mr Banks or Captain Phillips, could see Hanks in the Oscar race come the new year.

Saving Mr Banks is out now.
