Tom Hardy has revealed that he got 'battered' while filming Mad Max: Fury Road and picked up some injuries along the way.

Hardy is set to take over the role of Max Rockatansky for the first time as Mad Max returns to the big screen for the first time since Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome back in 1985.

And the British reveals that it was a tough shoot physically as he was thrown about in the wide range of stunts that he worked on for the film.

Speaking to SFX magazine, the actor said: "(Mad Max was) heavy metal in the baking sun, blunt traumas and car crashes, cars rolling over, spikes... Everything's metal. You're on wires with very little clothing on, and you've got a harness.

"It's very sweaty and hot and you're getting wrenched in the air and trying to bounce, smashed against metal, day in/day out, for six months. I got battered. I mean, it was bad."

And even though Hardy picked up some injuries and knocks along the way, he took a leaf out of Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson's book by carrying it on and playing that out in the scene.

He continued: "Everything hurts. So if you hit your nuts when you hit the back of that lorry, play it. That's what Harrison Ford would have done. That's what Mel would have done. They'd have played it straight. This is tough. So make it look tough.

"Hurt your finger? That's manly, mate. Get up and just hold your fingers and keep going, cos you can't stop. As I studied more about Max, I thought, 'He's not going to give up on life, for stubbornness alone.'"

Mad Max: Fury Road sees original series director George Miller return to the director's chair as he teams up with Hardy for the first time. Hardy is part of an all star cast as Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravtiz, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are all on board.

Mad Max: Fury Road is set to screen out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival this week and will be one of the most action packed and outrageous movies that we will see hit the big screen this year.

Mad Max: Fury Road is released 15th May.
