The Punisher is Marvel's vigilante assassin that was last seen on the big screen back in 2004 - played by Thomas Jane. But now it sees that Hardy has got his eye on the role.

Hardy is no stranger to the comic book movie world having starred in The Dark Knight Rises as villain Bane and been linked to the role of Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad. Sadly, he had to drop out of the Suicide Squad due to a scheduling conflict with The Revenant. This would be the first time that he has appeared in a Marvel movie.

But it sees that The Punisher is not the only movie that the actor really wants to star in as Splinter Cell is also on his radar.

Speaking to Collider, the actor said; "I want The Punisher... I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something... I don't know what I want... I'm not big enough to be The Punisher, I'm 5'9" [Laughs]... Frank Castle, I would love it."

Splinter Cell is a movie that was believed to be in the pipeline and Hardy has been attached to the project for some time. The movie would be based on the video game series of the same name and director Doug Liman has also been linked to the film.

However, there has been no word on the status of this project for some time - if you read into Hardy's above comments, it doesn't look like it is a project that is going anywhere fast.

As for Hardy, he will return to the big screen later this month with Mad Max: Fury Road and has been working on The Revenant so far this year. The Revenant is the latest film from Oscar winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu and would see him reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio.

We are also going to be seeing Hardy play both Reg and Ronnie Kray in Legend later this year, while musical London Road is also set to hit the big screen this summer.

Will Marvel jump at the chance to bring The Punisher back to the big screen now that a big name has expressed an interest in starring in the movie? I guess we are going to have to wait and see. The character's rights now lie with Marvel and it would be a shame to see such a major opportunity disappear.
