Over the last few years, we have seen a whole host of young adult novels get a big screen makeover... in January 2016, it is the turn of The 5th Wave.

The 5th Wave

The 5th Wave

The 5th Wave is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Rick Yancey and was the first in a trilogy of young adult science fiction novels. The book has been adapted for the big screen by Susannah Grant, who wrote the scripts for The Soloist and In Her Shoes.

The movie will see Chloë Grace Moretz take on the central role of Cassie Sullivan as she teams up with filmmaker J Blakeson for the first time. This is only the second feature film for Blakeson and will come six years after he made his debut with The Disappearance of Alice Creed.

We are going to have to wait until January before the film hits the big screen but the first trailer for the movie has arrived - check it out:

Moretz follows in the footsteps of Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley by leading a YA movie and it will be the first time we see her on the big screen in 2016 - I am looking forward to seeing her tackle this role.

A great cast has been assembled for the film as Moretz is joined by Liev Schreiber, Nick Robinson, Alex Roe, Maria Bellow, Ron Livingston, Maika Monroe, and Tony Revolori.

In the new film The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother.

As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope - if she can only trust him.

It really has been hit and miss for this genre over the years, with the likes of The Hunger Games and Twilight enjoying huge commercial success - however, others have not been such a smash with the critics and at the box office.

The 5th Wave is a terrific book and I can't wait to see how it translates onto the big screen and how Blakeson puts his own stamp on it.

The 5th Wave is released January 2016.
