The Martian

Matt Damon is set to return to the big screen this autumn as he teams up with director Ridley Scott for sci-fi film The Martian.

We are big fans of Damon here at FemaleFirst and this is his first leading role since The Monuments Men at the beginning of 2014, as he takes on the main role of Mark Watney.

As well as having Damon back, it is also great to see Scott back in the director's chair as he sends audiences back into space for a brand new adventure.

The brand new full-length trailer for the film has been released and it looks like it is going to be an action packed ride:

We have already seen some great ensemble casts lists this year, but The Martian boasts one of the best as Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Jeff Daniel, Michael Pena, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are all also on board.

The Martian is based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir and has been adapted for the big screen by Drew Goddard - who has penned screenplays for Cloverfield, World War Z, and The Cabin in the Woods.

This will be the first time that Goddard has worked on a Scott directed movie as the filmmaker return to the director's chair for the first time since Exodus: Gods and Kings.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit, and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring 'the Martian' home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.

There have been some terrific space movies in the last couple of years - Gravity and Interstellar being the two that really do stand out - and I think that Scott and co are going to deliver another standout film in this genre.

The Martian Trailer is released later this year.
