Steamboat Willie

Steamboat Willie

Mickey Mouse is one of the greatest and most iconic animated characters of all time... this week he has celebrated his 85th birthday.

To wish Mickey Mouse - who is a personal Disney favourite of mine - a very Happy Birthday we take a look at some of his best movie moments over the years.

- Steamboat Willie

Steamboat Willie was released on 18th November 1928 and introduced film audiences to Mickey Mouse.

While this was the third of Mickey's films - he had also appeared in Plane Crazy and Gallopin' Gaucho - they failed to get distribution.

Steamboat Willie was the first cartoon with synchronised sound and is considered a milestone in animation cinema.

When it was released it was widely praised for its technical innovation, and an icon was born!!!

- Building a Building

In 1933 Mickey Mouse returned to the big screen in Building a Building, as he once again reunited with Minnie Mouse.

The movie saw David Hand make his first directorial outing for Disney as we saw Mickey Mouse working as a construction site.

Peg-Leg Pete also appears in the short as Mickey's supervisor, while Minnie sells lunches to the workers.

Building a Building is another charming black and white film for Mickey Mouse and was nominated for a Best Animated Short Oscar; it lost out to Three Little Pigs.

- The Band Concert

The Band Concert was the first time that we saw Mickey Mouse on the big screen in colour.

Directed by Wilfred Jackson, the movie sees Mickey Mouse take on the role of a band conductor as he struggles through a first public performance.

The Band Concert is widely regarded as one of Disney's most acclaimed shorts.

Goofy, Clarabelle Cow and Donald Duck also feature in the short; Donald Duck is the only speaking character in the film.

- Fantasia

Mickey Mouse stepped onto the big screen in 1940 when he starred as The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Fantasia is made up of eight animated segments set to classical music and remains one of Disney's most daring movies.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is the film's most famous segment and sees Mickey trying out some of his master's tricks... only for it to go horribly wrong.

The movie remains one Mickey Mouse's most iconic roles and performances.

- Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Over the years Mickey Mouse has competed with Warner Bros' creation Bugs Bunny, in 1988 they shared the screen together.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was the movie that saw them share the screen - Disney and Warner agreed that both characters would share the exact same screen time.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was directed by Robert Zemeckis and followed a toon hating detective who has to prove the innocence Of Roger Rabbit after he is accused of murder.

The movie was a box office success and was the first ever animation/live action film to win four Academy Awards.

Mickey Mouse will be back on the big screen this December in new short Get A Horse - which will play in front of Frozen.

Frozen/Get A Horse are released 6th December.
