Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean have ignited hopes of a Fugees reunion after they both signed up to perform at an upcoming festival in New Zealand.

The pair will hit the stage as solo artists at the Raggamuffin Music Festival in Rotorua in January, marking Hill's first major appearance since ill health forced her to cancel her entire European tour over the summer .

In October, Jean poured doubt on the chances of the Killing Me Softly hitmakers getting back together, admitting he'd rather leave the band's legacy intact instead of trying to repeat the success of their hugely successful album The Score.

He said, "To me, they're (Fugees) great and they're gonna always be great. But the Fugees, it's better that it leaves the myth vibe. Like The Score is a myth. When you hear it, it's a myth. It was done in the basement. Like you don't wanna go from there to do a sequel and you've destroyed your complete myth."

But fans are hopeful Jean will make an exception when he shares the bill with Hill on 23 January to perform classics like Killing Me Softly With His Song, Fu-Gee-La and Ready or Not.

The group, including rapper Pras Michel, parted ways in 1997. They enjoying a brief reunion in 2004 but split again in 2007.
