The Spice Girls make the top 10 of most cringe worthy

When asked the question: “Which band did you love the most when you were a kid?” the response always started with a long pause and an “I don’t want to tell you” expression.

After much debate, here are the top 10 most embarrassing bands and artists we used to worship.

stepsFrom fab, to flab, to fab again.

Steps- Formed in 1997, and became global sensations. The members were: Lisa Scott-Lee, Claire Richards, Ian “H” Watkins, Faye Tozer and Lee Latchford-Evans. The bands were famous for their matching costumes, rip-off cover songs and dance routines that any dedicated fan could show you song from song. In fact ask a dedicated fan to do it and they’ll more than likely refuse because it was, er, cringing. Sadly, the band split on Boxing Day in 2001 (what made it worse was my auntie buying me a steps t-shirt for Christmas that I received moments after hearing the news,) resulting in H and Claire forming a duet, which never really lifted off the ground. Oh well. After Claire had her baby, her weight soared giving her the oppotunity to release a fitness DVD showing her dramatic weight loss.

The Spice Girls- If any girl said they never wanted to be one of the Spice Girls they would be lying. The whole country went Spice Girl crazy when they came on the scene in 1994 with their famous song “Wannabe” released in 1996. Their movie “Spice World” became a box office hit, the girls were just unstoppable. When Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell left, the band tried to work as a four piece but the magic disappeared. The band finally split in 2000 but reunited in 2007 for a tour.

Boyzone- One of most successful heart throbs of all time, forming in 1993; they became the biggest boyband of the 90’s. Throughout the decade they dominated the charts with songs such as: “When You Say Nothing At All” and “Words.” Stephen Gately passed away on October 10 2009 which came as a shock to all Boyzone fans. Despite their loss, the band is still together and is expected to do a tour in March 2011. boyzone

S Club 7- You just had to love this band. TV shows and sold out tours; if they reunited the fuss would just be as big as when the Spice Girls did. “Bring It All Back” and “Never Had A Dream Come True” were two of the band’s most famous songs. The band only lasted 5 years although Rachel Stevens is still very much in the public eye. Maybe we’ll see a reunion tour. Or maybe not.

Five- Quite a fitting band for number five in the top 10, and very deserving with their cheesy songs. Under the same record label as S Club 7, the band entered the music scene in 1997 and their success soared worldwide. Unfortunately for the boys, they all tried solo careers but failed. When the band tried to make a comeback, they were unable to secure a good enough record deal. Such a shame.

B*Witched- Between 1998 and 2002, B*Witched were the most popular Irish girl group. “C’est la vie” is a disco classic (remember school discos?) which got them to number one in the UK charts. Sisters Edele and Keavy have joined together to make the band The Barbarellas whose single is due to be out at the end of this month.

N’Sync- This American boyband came together in 1995 and worked their way to success. They made many girls fall to their feet with their romantic songs and stunning looks. The band also appeared as cartoons on The Simpsons. Justin Timberlake was the member who received the most publicity after he began dating childhood friend and superstar Britney Spears and took up acting roles in films such as “Shrek the Third”. Timberlake carried on with a solo career while the band slowly slipped out of the limelight.

Backstreet Boys- These boys were the most successful out of everyone in this top 10. That is because they split then reunited and were still a success, which is very rare for a band that disappeared for a few years. They started out in 1993 and gained many number one hits like: “I Want It That Way” and “Larger Than Life.” The boys are rumoured to be planning a tour with New Kids On The Block in 2011.

A1- It seems that it was all about the boybands in the 90’s. The band signed to Columbia Records in 1999, since then gaining two number ones and eight top 10 hits. However their fame was short lived when original member Paul Marazzi left the band in 2002. Mark, Ben and Christian are still making music in Norway and appeared on the X Factor Norway in 2009. Maybe there is still hope for the boys.

Atomic Kitten- Who can forget the kittens! The band was born in 1997 but their first single “Right Now” wasn’t released until December 1999 but broke into the top 10 UK chart. In 2003 the group tried to break into the American industry but failed to make a great impression. When Kerry Katona left the band due to her pregnancy, she was replaced by Jenny Frost. The band was slowly went downhill and the girls went their separate ways. Kerry Katona has been in the public eye over various scandals and recently, her breath taking transformation. Jenny Frost is now a presenter for Snog, Marry and Avoid.

There are so many cringe worthy bands to mention but these all belong in the top 10 as the cheesiest. No matter how much we tell ourselves that we were fools to enjoy such bands, they are part of our childhood. Comment to tell us which band or musician you loved as a child.
