Broadway Calls

As FemaleFirst caught up with Broadway Calls to chat about their new single, Be All You Can’t Be, we thought we’d delve a little deeper into their world of Paul Simon, food and Punk.

Hello there pretties, how are things going in your lovely world?

Things are going extremely lovely in our lovely world.  Besides the recurring trend of not enough sleep.

Aww, sucks to be you, anyway, we are proper 100% loving your super hot new single ‘Be All You Can’t Be’…tell us a bit about the inspiration behind it…

In the US, everyday you can walk into a public school, and see a military recruiter telling 16, 17, and 18 year olds that the only option they have to pay for college is joining the army, or navy, or whatever. They single out the poor kids. The ones that don't have rich parents, and smooth talk them into signing up. I think it's dangerous and disgusting. Ha, we're really not a very political band. This just really bothers me, so I had to write about it.

To anyone who hasn’t heard of you yet, how would you describe your sound?

We're a pop punk band. Our sound is influenced by bands like Generation X, The Ramones, Jawbreaker, Green Day, Alkaline Trio. Stuff like that. We DONT have breakdowns.

If you were going to give us just one song of yours to listen to so that you would become our new favourite singer, what would it be?

Hmmm. One song? I don't think I'm capable of convincing anyone I'm a good singer, but I know the kind of song I like to sing along to, and I try to write lyrics and melodies that people will remember and love. Try ‘Save Our Ship’ from our self titled album, or ‘Tonight’s Alive’ off our new record.

If you could cover another band’s song, what would it be?

We cover "Boxcar" by Jawbreaker on an almost nightly basis. We also do The Smiths, Kid Dynamite and Operation Ivy.

And can you sum up your good selves in just five words?

We kinda really like food.

What makes you stand out from the crowd?

Lately it's been our lack of hardcore influence in our music. Josh and I were in a hardcore band for 3 years. We know how to play that stuff, but we think it sounds really stupid when it's mixed with pop punk. A lot of other bands seem to think it's a good idea though...

What three bands would you have to headline your dream festival?

Refused, Kid Dynamite, Paul Simon.

What has been your favourite musical memory to date?

There's been a lot on this tour. Playing our first headlining show at Gilman was incredible.

If all of the bands equipment was on fire, what one piece would you save and why?

My amp. It's expensive.

Who do you think is the greatest artist around at the moment?

That's tough... Probably some kid in a garage somewhere that nobody has heard yet.

If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Our new one. Yeah, it's that good.

Okay, now we want to ask you some random questions;

Tell me about the most terrifying experience of your life…

I don't want to because it involves family members. Ok? Ok.

What’s the most stupid purchase you’ve ever made?

I bought a Simple Plan CD when they first came out.  Bad idea.

Why go to the top of a tall building, only to put money in binoculars and look at things on the ground?

You use the binoculars as a scope, and then you spit on innocent little children. Punk. Heh.
