Diane Birch

Diane Birch

Singer-songwriter Diane Birch took half her lifetime, and travelled across the globe, to get to America, where she literally found her voice and made her remarkable debut, Bible Belt.

Though only in her mid-twenties, Birch likes to think of herself as an “old soul,” and indeed there is a startling maturity in her singing and a veteran’s self-assurance in her writing. I caught up with her to ask the ‘15 Questions We Ask Everyone.’

Hello there little monster, what are you up to?

Getting ready to play on Jools Holland tonight!

So, tell me a bit about what you’re here to promote?

I'm promoting my first album called 'Bible Belt' which is a collection of songs that I've written about my life and my journey.

And if we didn’t have any clue as to who you were, what three words sum you up?

Free, unique, dreamer

And as Jacko had the Moonwalk and Elvis had the snake hips, what do you have that makes you unique?

I shake my fringe a lot!

Now, clearly we need to get to know each other more, so tell me an interesting fact about you that noone else knows?

People think all I listen to is The Carpenters and Carole King.  I actually spend most of my time at the moment listening to everything from 3-6 Mafia to Kraftwerk to Giorgio Moroder.

What song do you wish you’d written?

Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush

If I was contemplating coming to your show or sitting at home and TV, how would you convince me to come out?

If you come I'll sing Snoop Dogg's unedited 'Sexual Eruption' for you??

And if you were to take me on a trip to your hometown, what would be the first place we’d go?

If we're calling my hometown Portland Oregon, I'd take you to Stumptown coffee shop for a cup of amazing java!

Who was the last person you called / text and what for?

My product manager to say that the people who were supposed to call me for a phone interview haven't called.

If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?

I would be able to fly.

If you had to date a member of the same sex (or opposite sex if the case may be) who would it be?

Patti Smith

What was the last thing you bought?

A vintage Indian rug

Have you ever been arrested?

No

Speaking of prison - if you were to send someone to prison for crimes against music, who would it be?

Simon Cowell

What were you doing last night at 11?
