Hannah Boleyn

Hannah Boleyn

Rising star Hannah Boleyn has been caught in a whirlwind of success and now, she's releasing her new music video exclusively through Female First.

We also got the chance to put some questions to Hannah about life in the industry, being a female musician and her inspirations as an artist.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

1) I'm a girl's girl, with a weakness for new shoes and writing songs about heartbreak.
2) I love dramatic music that sounds like it should belong on the soundtrack to a James Bond movie.
My music is a mix of these two things and I call it 'Cinematic Soul'.

Has music always been a passion of yours?

Yes. When I was at primary school I told the teachers I was going to be a pop star. I think they assumed I'd grow out of it!

How did you feel when When You're Gone became a big radio hit?

I was over the moon. I remember sitting at home on the sofa with my tea and peanut butter on toast listening to its first play on the Graham Norton show. I'd always dreamt about hearing my song on the radio so that was pretty cool.

Why did you make the decision to spend 2013 working on material rather than releasing other tracks?

I didn't expect to get such a great response to 'When You're Gone' and as a result fond myself in this strange position where I had no manager, no new material and a song on Radio 2.

So I found myself management and they introduced me to some really great songwriters who I've been collaborating with over the past year.

What is it about music that you love?

I love the emotion. I think the best songs are the ones that really make you feel something - like when you're having a crap day and then you go home, put on some bright red lipstick and turn 'I Will Survive' up to full volume. Suddenly you're ready to take on the world again!

How difficult would you say it is for a female in the industry?

Erm, yes... I think Lily Allen's 'Hard out here' sums it up pretty well!

Where do you draw influence from for your songs?

My influence comes from when I feel emotional about something. Usually it's because I get dumped and then I write a song about it. And then I feel like I've had the last laugh.
It's funny because I bumped into an ex recently and he said 'Oh when is your new song coming out I'd love to hear it?' and I was like 'er, no you probably don't seeing as it's about pretending you're dead!'

Can you tell us a little bit about your new track Cemetery?

Well, I was talking to my best friend's mum about how to get over someone and she said 'well the thing is Hannah, sometimes you've just got to pretend they're dead!', so I wrote 'Cemetery'. It's not supposed to be taken too seriously, it's all about letting your inner crazy out and having a bit of fun.

What do you hope to get out of the next 12 months?

I want to release my first album, keep writing and performing, and enjoy the ride...

Are you working on any other projects you can share some details about?

I'm plotting the video for my next single and putting all my effort into getting the album ready for summer.
