It’s been announced that Blur will be honoured at the 2012 Brit Awards, which is being held at London's O2 Arena.

The Britpop band, which has been around 20 years now, is set to receive the award for Outstanding Contribution To Music at next year’s ceremony. The award has previously been won by The Pet Shop Boys, David Bowie, The Who and Oasis.

Frontman, Damon Albarn, said: "It's great to have recognition for all the work and all the heartache and all the joy that’s gone into this band."

In a statement released after the announcement, BRIT’s Chairman, David Joseph, said: “"Their contribution to British music is immense. Blur is the perfect band to bring this award back for."

The news has come just days after Albarn hinted that Blur may be making a comeback. In an exclusive interview with NME last month, the lead singer revealed that the four band members have been meeting up “regularly”. He also said that they recorded “a spoken word piece…earlier this year.”

The last time the ‘Song 2’ musicians performed together was in 2009, when they played at a number of gigs including Hyde Park and Glastonbury.
