Meryl Streep and Neil Diamond awarded with arts honour

Neil Diamond and Meryl Streep will receive awards for their cultural contrubutions to the arts as this year's recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors.

Sweet Caroline singer Diamond and the actress will pick up the accolades at the 34th annual ceremony before President Barack Obama on 4 December.

Acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Broadway star Barbara Cook and saxophonist/composer Sonny Rollins were among the others chosen for their lifetime of work.

The five stars will join a long list of talented past honorees including Steven Spielberg, Dolly Parton, Barbara Streisand and Robert De Niro.

Diamond has already had a tremendous year having been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March and a Billboard Icon Award in May.

He has also announced his engagement to his girlfriend and co-manager this week.
