Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley said today, "I’m delighted to welcome Pixie to the line-up. It’s fantastic to have such wonderful artists helping to launch the festival and raise awareness of Peace One Day and the Global Truce 2012 campaign."

The Derry-Londonderry concert is the first show in Northern Ireland for Gilley’s Peace One Day campaign, which in 2001 led a process that resulted in the unanimous adoption by UN member states of the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. This day is now fixed in the global calendar every year: 21 September is Peace Day.

The concert will feature video statements from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Yoko Ono; Chairperson of the African Union, Jean Ping; and other international figures.

In 2007, Jeremy Gilley and Jude Law travelled to Afghanistan to spearhead an initiative that has resulted in the vaccination against polio of 4.5 million children following Peace Day agreements by all parties in the region in 2007/8/9. This work forms the culmination of Gilley’s feature documentary The Day After Peace.

Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law said, "I'm very excited to be coming to Derry-Londonderry for the Peace One Day celebration. It will be wonderful night. We're grateful to all the artists and everyone from the city who is helping to make it possible."

Ruth Mackenzie, Director of the London 2012 Festival, said: "I’m absolutely delighted Pixie is joining the line up of talented artists and I’m sure this concert will provide a spectacular opening to the London 2012 Festival".

Peace One Day is the opening concert for the London 2012 Festival - a 12-week UK-wide celebration starting on June 21st and featuring leading artists from around the world. A number of projects in the UK wide programme, including the Peace One Day Global Truce Countdown Concert, are inspired by the concept of Olympic Truce which dates back to the 9th Century BC. In ancient times the Olympic Truce broke the constant cycle of war between Greek city states, establishing a window of peace to make the Games possible.

The concert is one of the first major events to take place as part of the build-up to City of Culture 2013 is supported by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Culture Minister Caral Ní Chuilín said: "Peace One Day is a key part of the cultural offering coming to the North as part of the 2012 Olympics. It is especially significant that the concert will be in Derry, which is preparing to be City of Culture next year, and I have no doubt it will be a significant event for the city."

Tourism Minister, Arlene Foster said: "Securing such a high profile star as Pixie Lott is wonderful news and will create even greater excitement around the Peace One Day concert.  This concert is the first ni2012 event to take place in Londonderry and will be followed by the arrival of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in early July.

"As well as offering local people the chance to enjoy great acts and events, ni2012 ensures tourists will also have a great experience and encourage them to return to Northern Ireland."
