Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake may be planning to release a second album this year, after QuestLove, the drummer for The Roots, revealed that another LP will also be out later this year.

Speaking in the forums of hip-hop website Okayplayer.com, Questlove said “spoiler alert. 20/20 Vol 2 comes out in nov. (10 songs now.....10 songs later= 20 vision)” before saying that “justin said he wanted timb [Timberland] to ‘get back in his real zone’ even if it meant alienating the tweens born after 86 who never ever heard of the Sly Slick and Wicked [a 1970’s blues band].”

While Justin’s yet to either confirm or deny the fact, the prospect of this being a second full album and not just an expanded version of The 20/20 Experience is rather surprising considering Timberlake’s first album in more than half a decade is out this week.

While you can see in my The 20/20 Experience review that I’m a fan of what Timberlake’s doing, I’ve always had massive doubts about artists releasing multiple albums in less than eighteen months. How can the creative juices get flowing once again that quickly? I want my singers and bands well rested and prepared for their next salvo of music, not tired and feeling on the clock.

However, given that Timberlake’s come back with an album that doesn’t really want to conform to the rules of radio friendly pop, a second set of long, slightly experimental tracks has me actually excited rather than pessimistic.

This album saw a new Justin appear. Happy, content and dressed to the nines, this latest album shows that this is an artist wanting to take you one a musical journey instead of crank out cookie-cutter pop songs, even if occasionally it might reach slightly out of its grasp. If QuestLove’s right and the tracks are already written and ready for studio time, then the fears of Justin quickly hashing out a new set of songs are quickly flushed under the carpet.

As long as Timberlake and Timberland can keep up the same levels of creativity that he’s shown so far, then we thoroughly support his decision to double up on The 20/20 Experience.
