Ed Sheeran has topped the iTunes end of year chart, after his second album 'X' was released in June, becoming the most-downloaded record from the retailer in the UK this year.

Speaking after the announcement Ed said: "Absolutely buzzing to hear I've got the best selling album on iTunes this year."

The news comes just after 'X' was also named as the most-streamed album in the world this year on Spotify, with over 430 million plays since its release.

Sam Smith's 'In The Lonely Hour' came second with the 'Frozen' soundtrack coming in third.

Best-selling singles were also revealed with Pharrell and 'Happy' topping the list, followed by Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne's 'Rather Be' in second place - iTunes UK's pick for best song.

After hearing the news the trio said: "Amazing to find out that 'Rather Be' has been chosen as Song of the Year by iTunes. Thank you so much to everyone who bought it and supported us. 2014 has been an incredible year. Happy Christmas to one and all."

Tracks from Meghan Trainor, John Legend and Ella Henderson were also named in the top 10 best-selling singles list.
