Sia has apologised to those that have been offended by her new music video for 'Elastic Heart'.

The film features 28-year-old Shia LaBeouf alongside 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler, and has been criticised for being potentially perverse, showing the pair performing an interpretive dance in a cage dressed in nude-coloured leotards.

Now, the musician's clarified the meaning behind the clip which she says depicts the "warring" parts of her personality.

Writing on her official Twitter account she explained: "I anticipated some 'pedophelia!!!' Cries for this video. All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play

"These two warring 'sia' self states. (sic)"

Over three million views in less than a day have been racked up for the video, causing some on social media to slam the musician for the piece.

One user wrote: "Smacks of child molestation #pervert #unacceptable #childabuse...Explain please!" and another simply said it was "disgusting".

As well as explaining what she hoped those who watched the video would see, she apologised to those who did find offense through the video.

She added: "I apologize to those who feel triggered by #ElasticHeart My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody."
