Metallica's Lars Ulrich loves touring because it gets him "out of the house".
The 'Enter Sandman' band's founder and drummer is a family man but admits playing in a loud heavy metal band is easier than dealing with his kids Myles, Layne and Bryce.
He told Classic Rock magazine: "Nowadays we look at rock 'n' roll as our escape. The hardest thing in my life is 6.45am at home with the kids. It's not hard going on the road, playing concerts, flying around in G5 [jets] and staying at the Four Seasons [hotel]. Going away for two weeks on a rock 'n' roll journey? That's just getting out of the house."
The band has calmed down their rock 'n' roll ways in recent years with Lars saying he gave up drugs in 2007.
He added: "I'm about a hundred years old and a family man. Sex? Sure. Rock'n'roll? Sure. And lots of craziness and naughtiness. But life is great without drugs"
The 49-year-old star isn't worried about getting older, and doesn't see the band retiring at any time soon.
He added: "I don't have some weird relationship with eternal youth and all that s**t.
"I saw a band you may have heard of called The Rolling Stones in San Francisco. [Drummer] Charlie Watts is 71 and playing better than ever."
