American Idol star Adam Lambert has finally ‘come out’ as a gay man in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone magazine - much to the delight of gay rights activists.

The star, whose sexuality has been speculated about ever since he appeared on the U.S. TV talent show earlier this year, has opened up in a new chat with rock bible Rolling Stone.

Although he admits that most people had correctly guessed he was a homosexual before this magazine interview, he tells the readers; “I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay. I'm proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It's just another part of me...

“I was worried that (coming out) would be so sensationalised that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing. I'm an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing. It shouldn't matter. Except it does. It's really confusing."

But the President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) hopes his remarks inspire others struggling to 'come out' and tells us; "American Idol has become iconic in our culture, and as Adam continues to share his story during his post-Idol career, we hope his decision to live openly and honestly inspires gay people and opens the hearts and minds of his fans and others he will continue to entertain."

Either way, Adam Lambert is adamant he does not want his sexuality to have a bearing on his music career: "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader."
