We Three Kings are back this week with their third album Sunshine State of Mind, their first album since Smile Kid back in 2009.
The band’s debut record back in 2007 won over a legion of fans but Sunshine State of Mind will possibly not have quite the same success as you feel that they have gone backwards every so slightly.
They have abandoned the pop-punk sound that put them on the map and have decided to go down a more mainstream pop path.
Friday Is Forever is the opening track on the album and it is packed with catchy melodies and there is a great string arrangement on the song.
Say You Like Me carries on this sunny theme and it is the catchiest track on the album, not to mention my personal fave.
There is absolutely no doubt that there is an energy to all of the tracks but there is just a lack of passion and emotion that was present in their earlier work - which is a shame.
I’m sorry but you just can’t take a band that title a track Sleep With Me very seriously and there is just a real adolescent fell to all of the tracks on the album.
Now for someone who is coming to their music for the very first time then it is a solid record but fans of their earlier work will be disappointed.
Sure the pop-punk sound may not be totally mainstream and I can understand why they would be looking to make their sound more appealing to a wider audience but now they sound like a band who are unsure of who they are.
The songs on the record do tell stories moving to a new stage in your life, love and heartbreak but they do lack any real emotional depth.
We The Kings are a young and exciting band who has experimented with their sound with this new record and that has to be admired.
But they have gone too far down the mainstream path and they have lost the elements that made them unique and exciting in the first place.
