There’s a lot to be said for Essex. Despite what may be lurking in the suburbs, maybe it’s the boredom, or just the extensive odour of magic tree car freshener, it has a habit of spawning improbable musical talent. From The Prodigy to Squarepusher and (of course) Blur, the latest to emerge are Esser. Originating as the brainchild of Ben Esser, who tired of sitting behind the drum skins in covers bands at Pontins decided to cut, paste, sing, play and produce every note of I Love You into pop delectation. Now aided live by a full band of samples, bass and his little brother on drums, plus the mixing sheen of soon to be super producer Lexxx, Esser are about to be exposed as one of the most innovative pop outfits in recent memory.‘I Love You’ sounds like a 30’s gramophone hot-wired by Blur in their glorious Popscene days with a healthy injection of full-on fuzzed-up bass diving it over the indie pop cliff with a beat explosion. Then there’s Ben’s ever present sardonic lyrics - “how do I tell you that I’m braking in half / well, love is no excuse for bad art”. The discs’ flipside ‘Long Arms’ is a rampant sing along La, La, La-fest sounding like Stiff Little Fingers had they listened to a lot of Wham. With this debut single, coming out on the so hip it makes you sick Merok label (Klaxons, Crystal Castles, Teenagers), Esser have quite possibly made the perfect pop nugget for 2008. Esser
