Whether it's at home or at work, today is the day to clean away all your unwanted things off your desk- here are ten reasons why;

Find a place for your pens please!

Find a place for your pens please!

It will give you a clearer headspace- If you are busy and your mind is awash with things to complete- at least you can look at your desk and it doesn't pose another thing to add to your to do list.

It will make you feel better- Believe it or- when you have a good sort out you feel like you have it together. If you are organised at work, you will feel like you can do anything in your personal life.

You can do things faster- If everything is where it should be- you don't spend a portion of your day trying to find the one thing you are looking for.

You look more professional- If your boss does the rounds and your desk is like an elevated waste bin- they may not have much faith in your organisational skills. It may even come up in your review- be warned.

Bit by bit- If you sort out your desk area now and continue to maintain it little and often, you will never have to go through this ordeal ever again.

You may find something you've been looking for- A letter, bank statement, receipt- whatever it is that might have gone missing- this is your chance to find it and file it away.

It protects sensitive data- If you have paperwork with important information on it that you haven't filed securely or shredded your problems might be about to get a whole lot worse.

You have the room to work- If you have been negotiating around piles of paperwork and stocks of books for a while now- enjoy being able to stretch out your elbow and see your co-workers.

You don't need home to look like work- If your desk is at home- try to avoid making it look like work from work. Your desk at home should be reserved for quirky mugs full of spare pens and photos of your family- not piles of work stuff that you've run out of room for in your workstation.

It more hygienic- Who knows what combination of germs lie on your desk and on your key board, especially if you eat and drink at your station. Crumbs and sticky spots might lurk under your files- now is the time to clean every last inch of the surface you spend eight hours sitting at or you may end up getting sick.
