UKIP looks set to land its second MP as polls have opened this morning for the Rochester and Strood by-election, which comes just weeks after Douglas Carswell won in Clacton.

Mark Reckless followed in the footsteps of Carswell by defecting from the Conservatives to UKIP, triggering the by-election in Rochester and Strood - a by-election that UKIP could very well win when the polls close tonight.

Reckless defected from the Tory party back in September over Cameron's planned reforms of the EU should the Conservatives win the general election next year. Cameron has promised a referendum on the UK's inclusion in the EU should he win a second term as Prime Minister.

Polls have suggested that Reckless is the favourite to win the seat as UKIP continue to gather strength, popularity and potential voters all over the country as they take full advantage of the struggles of both the Tories and Labour.

David Cameron has battled hard and was determined to hold the Rochester seat and should UKIP be victorious it would be a disaster for the Tory leader. UKIP and Carswell saw off the Tory challenge in Clacton and this would be the second loss of a Conservative seat to UKIP in just a few months.

Cameron has visited Rochester five times on the run up to the ballot, but it seems all of his campaigning could have been in vain and this could spell problems for the Conservative leader from inside his own party.

And things could get even worse, as Reckless has hinted that even more Tories MPs could defect to UKIP once the battle for Rochester is over. Reckless has hinted that he has spoken to two other MPs in recent weeks who are thinking of following him out of the Conservative party.

Speaking to the Guardian, Reckless said: "During the campaign I have spoken with two Conservative MPs about the possibility of their moving over and I think they will want to see what the result is before making any decisions.

"One of them I had discussions with by telephone and the other I met in an undisclosed location, not in the constituency. It is a very individual decision. And I feed back to Nigel [Farage] on those conversations."

It has been revealed that Peter Bone, Philip Hollobone, and Martin Vickers have been canvassing their constituents about whether or not they want to leave the EU - just as Reckless did before he left the Tories. However, Bone, Hollobone, and Vickers have all denied that they have plans to defect to UKIP.

The polls in Rochester will remain open until this evening and a result about who has won the seat is expected in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
