10 Top Tips

2 - If looking at magazines becomes part of your routine, it's something they'll really look forward to.

3 - As well as sharing a story at bedtime, read the magazine at other times and in other places. Even if it's just for five minutes it's still worthwhile.

4 - Make sure you're both sitting comfortably so that you can focus on the story and enjoy it, without too many other distractions.

5 - Don't forget to read all sorts of other things like signs, labels and shopping lists, so that young children see that words are used everywhere.

6 - Talk about the magazine when you've finished looking at it - what was your favourite page? Who is your favourite character? What was the funniest bit?

7 - As you share the magazine, ask your child to say the names of the characters or join in with the songs from the programme.

8 - If you are reading the bedtime story, why not move your finger in a circle around your child's palm just like in the tv show? This can help to calm and settle your child. It will also put them in the mood for listening just before they go to sleep.

9 - Don't forget that for very young children pictures are just as important as words so ask them about the pictures as you look through the magazine. Can they see Upsy Daisy? What is she doing?

10 - Have fun reading together. If you enjoy it, the chances are your child will too!:
