How much would you earn from your parenting duties?

If parents were paid for each of the different roles they hold down together within the household, their combined annual salary would be £61,000 a year, according to research by Tesco Mobile.

The Tesco Mobile Family Matters report found that parents juggle 14 roles within the household often on top of full or part time work.

The mobile network has looked at the average number of hours mums and dads spend on their various roles and has equated that to the amount they would have earned if they were doing those jobs in the workplace.

Chauffeuring the kids to school five days a week, not to mention weekend outings and visits to friends’ houses, the time spent ferrying kids around adds up to £10,296 alone, while preparing the family meals everyday racks up an annual wage of around £6,000.

A Tesco Mobile spokesperson said: “We’ve always known that parents are worth their weight in gold, and this research just goes to prove it. On top of their day jobs, mums and dads are clocking up a huge number of hours on parenting duties.

“It is for this reason that we have launched Family perks to lighten the load of the bank of mum and dad – helping them streamline their finances so they have one less job to worry about.”

With three hours of cleaning, two hours of homework help and four hours cooking up the family meals, mums and dads are clocking up an extra 1,820 hours between them a year.

Katherine Rake, CEO of the Family and Parenting Institute, who consulted on the Tesco Mobile Family Matters Index said: “Parents today are under pressure from all sorts of angles, so whilst they should be celebrated for their multitasking magnitude, they always appreciate support in balancing work, life, childcare and managing the family finances.”
