Are you making handmade presents this year?

At least one in five presents given this Christmas will be handmade, according to research released today by creative self-publishing platform Blurb.

The survey found that 38 per cent of respondents plan to give handmade or personalised presents this year, with nearly a third planning to give five or more.

Furthermore a whopping half of us like to receive these gifts and nearly half said that they keep handmade or personalised presents longer than shop-bought ones too – proving we’re a nation who loves presents with sentimental value.

Teresa Pereira from Blurb, said: “It’s human nature to crave the homemade – it’s comforting and thoughtful. Unique gifts made by hand offer a personal touch, something truly special and considered.

“A great example of this is a photo book, something that’s really popular at this time of year. We’re all guilty of taking brilliant photos and then forgetting about them, leaving them to languish on hard drives and SD cards.

“But actually in less than an hour you can create a really professional-looking, ultra-personal gift that will be cherished forever. Not to mention it makes great use of your photos, creates lasting memories and makes you look really thoughtful and creative,” she said.

The most popular items that thoughtful Brits plan to make at home this year are cakes, personalised Christmas cards, knitted jumpers, scarves and socks, photo books, and framed photographs.

The research also showed the amount of time people are willing to spend on these handmade gifts for friends and family with 70 per cent spending up to a week building, making and creating personalised presents, whist 11 per cent have even spent over a month.

The trend is set to continue too as two out of five of us would like to make even more handmade Christmas gifts.

Blurb has itself seen a huge growth in demand this Christmas from customers wishing to create their own photo books, such as those featuring their favourite images from Instagram, Facebook, holidays, as well cookbooks and family history books. Personal ebooks of family photos are also proving popular.
