In a world full of technology, it’s sometimes tough to show your kids the joys of reading books. The best way of getting them engaged is to capture their imaginations, even if it means reading aloud to them in a funny voice.

Not only will you be spending time with your kids but you’ll also be helping their reading skills. If you want to get your kids reading, here are some great ones to start with, and you’ll find that they’re just as enjoyable for adults too.

10. Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White

Adapted into a film in 2006, Charlotte’s Web tells the tale of Fern Arable discovering the world of talking animals on her doorstep, with Wilbur her pig and Charlotte the spider. A simple and often underrated tale, Charlotte’s Web is moving as well as entertaining for your kids to enjoy.

9. The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson

A very popular book by the former children’s laureate Julia Donaldson, The Gruffalo saw thousands of children across the country enchanted with the Gruffalo and his life in the woods.

8. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great picture book for young children, and it has been a classic ever since its release in 1969.

7. Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie

Originally released as a stage play, Peter Pan has since been adapted into a novel. Although the film adaptations are far more popular than the novel, it’s still a great starting point for your kids, particularly if they’re already familiar with the characters.

6. The Tales of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter has become a household name for children’s books, and the pick of her many tales has to be those of Peter Rabbit.

5. The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis

Intended for older children, The Chronicles of Narnia were based on Christianity and can really encourage your kids to get reading. If they enjoy the opening novel, there are six more to keep them entertained.

4. Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne

Another kids’ favourite, Winnie the Pooh is full of lovable characters for everyone, from Tigger to Piglet to Winnie the Pooh himself.

3. Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling

A more recent series, Harry Potter has shot to global success. Although it has now come to an end, don’t let your kids miss out on the chance to delve into the world of Hogwarts.

2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

No list of children’s books would be complete without Roald Dahl. The recent adaptation starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore has seen popularity for this book rise again, and with good reason. Not only is it full of magical inventions but it teaches your kids about morality too.

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

A personal favourite, Fantastic Mr. Fox was the first children’s book I ever owned and I’ve still got the battered old copy. Mr Fox is a lovable rogue, and even though the film adaptation starring George Clooney didn’t reach global success, the novel is still something to be cherished.
