More than a quarter of parents will buy their children mobile phones this Christmas, but more than two thirds of them will not be insuring them.

Research by the UK’s leading mobile phone insurance website Mobileinsurance.co.uk found that out of 2317 parents polled, 27 per cent of them will be opting to by their kids a mobile phone, but 67 per cent of those said that they wont be buying insurance.

Only one in 10 will be purchasing insurance straight away, 12 per cent will insure it at a later date and 16 per cent were unsure whether they would get coverage.

Over half of those planning to go without insurance said that the reason was because they wanted to avoid extra costs. Nearly a fifth are looking to teach some lessons, explaining that the child understands that it is their responsibility if the phone is damaged or lost.

The average time expected for those in the ‘later date’ category was up to seven weeks.

John Lamerton, Managing Director of MobileInsurance.co.uk, said: ““Mobile insurance isn’t just something you need as soon as the handset starts being used. Sure, a phone is more likely to get broken once it’s out of the box and being used, but how about things like theft and loss?”

He added: “We’ve had numerous enquiries from uninsured phone owners who wanted our help when their handset was lost, stolen or broken, but there’s really nothing we can do.”
