As parents, we all want to buy our toddlers toys that will last. The last thing we need is to have to keep throwing money away by binning toys that were only bought a few weeks back. So here are my top suggestions for toys that will withstand the most brutal play from heavy handed toddlers.

Wooden toys: This could be anything from doll’s house furniture, blocks, figurines, play food, puzzles, toy kitchens- wood is much more durable than plastic and will therefore last much longer. Did you inherit some of your parents and grandparent’s wooden toys when you were little or when you had your own family? There’s a reason. Wooden toys are hardy, making them a great investment.

Board books: I always buy my two year old the board book version of a story instead of the hardback or paperback as they would be ruined in a matter of days. These are easily wiped down if sticky fingers get hold of them and can take an enthusiastic read or two!  Avoid lift and flap books if your toddler is over zealous when reading as they can easily tear out the flap- thus spoiling the surprise.

Duplo: Although plastic, Duplo is something else that is often handed down from generation to generation because this toy has stood the test of time and endured a lot of use in the process. Plus it prepares them well for playing with another robust toy later down the line- LEGO!

Dolls: Because dolls are made of plastic around the head, arms and legs they will last you longer than a teddy bear or other stuffed animal. If your toddler is very rough with their toys, you might want to opt for one that is made entirely of flexible plastic as opposed to a soft body as the stitching might come away with prolonged use and tugging.

Bamboo plates and cups: I have bought both plastic and bamboo for my little girl to eat and drink from and bamboo wins every time. Her plates, cups, bowls and cutlery have been through the dishwasher many times and still look just as they did when they were new. They have been dropped many times and I chop my daughter’s dinner up on them before serving each night and they still have no visible damage.

Stacking cups: These can be bumped, clashed and stacked together til your little one’s heart is content and they won’t show signs of wear. They will go through the dishwasher once they get grubby too, so you don’t have to spend time carefully cleaning each one.

Metal toys: While, I wouldn’t recommend anything with tiny parts that stick out like toy vehicles if your toddler is into rough play- there are lots of other options. Things like toy trolleys, wheelbarrows and play kitchenware such as pots, pans and baking trays and cookie cutters will survive even the most excitable playtime encounters. Much like wood, metal is built to last so your little one’s toys should be in great condition for any siblings or to pass onto other mums and dads once your toddler has grown out of them.

Toddlers love Christmas. Why? Because they are at the perfect age to understand what it’s all about- babies might appreciate the lights and the pretty colours but it’s all a mystery to them. Toddlers on the other hand are starting to get caught up in the joy of it all. The presents, the sweet treats and the build up for Santa’s arrival. We could all do with being a bit more toddler during the festive season, here’s why… They believe: Without question. As children get older they start to pick at the finer details- but toddlers believe it all and it makes you want to join in and believe along with them just like you did when you were a kid. So get swept up in the magic of Christmas all over again because your toddler would love to have you along for the ride... to read more click HERE
