The Countess of Wessex paid a surprise visit to a child at Leeds General Infirmary hospital yesterday (01.10.13).

Sophie - the wife of Prince Edward - brightened up Nikita Chidwick's day after she went to see her in the high-dependency unit in the Paediatric ward prior to her surgery for the spinal condition scoliosis.

Nikitia's mother, Maria is quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper as saying: "The countess was lovely and we had no idea about her visit until we were brought up here. It's taken Nikita's mind off being hungry from fasting."

The countess initially arrived at the hospital to officially open the new Paedriatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) before unveiling the plaque and chatting to former patients, Isabella Cook and Ellie Greenwood.

Sophie told Dr Tim Haywood, clinical lead for paediatric intensive care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust: "The care you are giving is absolutely fantastic."

He said after the event: "We are very proud of our new unit and were delighted to welcome the countess to see it for herself."

The blonde beauty first visited the hospital last year when she officially opened the Leeds General Infirmary and she proved such a big hit with patients that she was asked to become the Patron.
