Prince Andrew says it would be "illogical" not to be friends with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson

The Duke of York - the second child of Queen Elizabeth - says he maintains a friendship with Fergie for the sake of their daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and insists she's a "fantastic mother".

Andrew, 54, and Sarah split in 1992 and divorced four years later in 1996.

In an interview on US TV channel CNBC, the prince said: "It's more for the family than anything else. It's just part of life's rich tapestry. If you've been married to somebody I see it as illogical not to be a friend. Regardless of the set of circumstances. It has meant a whole heap to the family."

Meanwhile, Andrew revealed he is very proud of his young adult daughters for finding their way in life.

He enthused: "It's when other people come and tell you what they have seen or heard or interacted with [them] and how impressed they are, which makes me most proud."

Earlier this month, the Duchess of York was forced to cut her visit to the royal residence Balmoral short in order not to upset her former father-in-law Prince Philip, who is said to dislike her.
