Prince Charles

Britain's Prince Charles joked about becoming a grandfather during a royal visit.

The 64-year-old heir to the throne was on good form during the official opening of Fisher House, a centre for families of soldiers being treated at the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday (21.06.13), and even cracked a joke about the future addition to his family.

Charles will become a grandfather for the first time in July when his son Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, welcome their first child - and the royal hinted he won't be signing up for extensive babysitting duties.

Corporal Andy Reid, a firm supporter of the project, told the Birmingham Mail newspaper: "I asked him if he's looking forward to the birth of his grandchild and he said, 'Very much'.

"Then he laughed and said, 'It's great that you can hand them back over'. "

Charles spent time with wounded service personnel and their families before unveiling a plaque to mark the opening of Fisher House, which is supported by charity Help for Heroes.

Earlier in the day, he visited the Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull for its grand opening alongside girl band The Saturdays, who were thrilled to meet the royal.

Band member Frankie Sandford said: "We were really nervous about meeting Prince Charles, we knew we had to be prim and proper - but he was great."
