Prince Edward

Britain's Prince Edward officially opened the Leys School's Great Hall yesterday (23.01.14).

The Earl of Wessex was given a tour of the new multi-million pound theatre complex in Cambridge, England, by headmaster Martin Priestley, head boy James Albery and head girl India Steele, before declaring the facilities open.

The 49-year-old royal watched in on acting, dance and science lessons, before meeting members of staff and sitting down to watch a number of performances in the theatre.

The venue also welcomed more than 150 former pupils, parents and supporters - who have contributed to the project's funding over the past two years - to the opening, along with Cambridge mayor Cllr Paul Saunders, Lord Lieutenant Hugh Duberly, and Cllr Kevin Reynolds, chairman of Cambridgeshire County Council.

Edward said as he unveiled the plaque: "Thank you for inviting me to officially open this splendid new Great Hall.

"Everyone here has at some point or other made the mistake of opening their chequebook and making this possible.

"This is one of the best buildings of its type I have seen for a long time."

Mr Priestley told the Cambridge News: "It is our most important building project for a century and will provide wonderful facilities and educational opportunities, not just for the current generation of pupils but for many future Leysians.

"We are very grateful to the many generous supporters who have made Great Hall possible, and enjoyed having the opportunity to celebrate with them."
