Britain's Prince Edward is to visit Jamaica.

The 49-year-old royal - the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth - and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will make an official visit to the Caribbean island from March 2-5.

The prince will be visiting in his role international trustee and chairman of the international council, the authority which controls the Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme, and will be attending an awards ceremony.

On the first day of his visit, the local council of the award will be hosting a golf tournament, the Duke of Edinburgh's cup, to help support the development of the scheme.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and his wife, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, will make an official visit to Jamaica from March 2-5.

The Duke of Edinburgh awards recognise the efforts of young people for completing a number of self-improvement tasks and challenges. The programme is currently followed in 140 countries.

It is has not been confirmed whether Edward - who turns 50 days after returning from Jamaica - and Sophie will be accompanied on the trip by their children, Lady Louise, 10, and James, Viscount Severn, six.
