The 89-year-old monarch had been linked with a move to Manhattan, with reports suggesting she'd bought a $7.9 million (£5 million) flat in the Big Apple - but the rumours have transpired to be untrue.

The claims were initially driven by the buyer of the 18th floor apartment being listed as "Her Majesty the Queen in right of New Zealand".

The Real Deal website said: "The unit would serve perfectly as a getaway for the Queen's grandsons, or maybe even as her own getaway. Only, of course, if she decides to resign and hand the rei (g) ns to her son Charles."

However, it's subsequently come to light that the buyer of the property is, in fact, Gerard van Bohemen, New Zealand's Ambassador to the United Nations, the New York Post newspaper reports.

Although the Queen remains the head of state of New Zealand, Mr Bohemen used his formal title as her representative when he signed the deeds on the property.

Last month, meanwhile, it was suggested the Queen may have to be moved out of Buckingham Palace to allow maintenance work to take place.

The royal residence, which has not been decorated since 1952, needs new plumbing and wiring.
