Britain's Duchess of York has opened a cancer unit in Southampton.

Sarah Ferguson has officially deemed the new £2.4 million 10-bed facility at Southampton General Hospital, which has been funded by the Teenage Cancer Trust, as open.

The clinic has been offering specialist treatment to youngsters aged between 16-24 from the south of England and the Channel Islands since September.

The facilities available at the unit, which has taken eight months to build, include six inpatient en-suite bedrooms, four day care bed, a large social room and kitchen area that is open all hours.

A trust spokeswoman told the BBC: "Around 100 young people are diagnosed with cancer across Hampshire, Dorset, the Channel Islands, South Wiltshire, the Isle of Wight and West Sussex each year.

"Being treated alongside others their own age by experts in teenage and young adult cancer care, can make a huge difference to a young person's experience."

The Teenage Cancer Trust believe just over £1000-a-day needs to be raised in order to maintain the unit, fund specialist staff and offer free cancer awareness session in the region.
